Wellness Is Bigger Than What’s on Your Plate

For years, when we talked about wellness, the conversation usually sounded familiar: eat better, exercise more, drink your water, get enough sleep, and manage your stress. All of those things matter, and I will continue encouraging them. But the more community health work I do, the more convinced I become that we have been having an incomplete conversation.

Wellness is personal, but it is also environmental and communal.

Think about it. We can tell someone to eat healthier, but what healthy and affordable food is available where they live? We can encourage a woman to get her recommended health screenings, but does she have access to care, transportation, insurance, accurate information, and a provider she trusts? We can tell someone to reduce stress, but what if part of that stress comes from housing, finances, caregiving, neighborhood safety, or concerns about the environment around them?

Suddenly, "make better choices" becomes a much more complicated statement.

This is one reason my work has increasingly taken me into conversations about health equity and community wellness. Through my work with Sistahs Can We Talk and The Center, I have had opportunities to listen to families, collaborate with health organizations, provide education and screenings, and examine some of the conditions that influence health long before a person ever walks into a doctor's office.

One area that has become particularly important to me is environmental health. Our ongoing conversations surrounding the 29th and Grove contamination have reminded me that where we live can become part of our health story. When communities raise concerns about their health, we need to listen, ask questions, provide credible information, connect people with appropriate resources, and make sure their experiences are not overlooked.

That does not remove personal responsibility. I still believe we have a responsibility to care for these bodies we have been given. Move your body. Know your numbers. Get your screenings. Pay attention to what you eat. Rest. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself.

But I also believe communities deserve conditions that make healthy choices possible.

For me, that is where wellness and advocacy meet.

As the Evangelist of Wellness, my work is no longer simply about asking, "What can you do to become healthier?" I am also asking, "What can we do together to create healthier families and healthier communities?"

Those questions belong in the same conversation.

So this week's thought is simple: What around you is helping—or hindering—your ability to live well?

Look beyond the refrigerator and the gym. Think about your home, neighborhood, relationships, work, access to healthcare, stress, environment, and support system.

Because wellness is not just about what is happening inside your body.

It is also about the world your body has to live in.

Monday Motivation

Good morning,
Grace and peace be unto you!

It is finally Fall. While I enjoy parts of this season, likes sweaters, fire pits, and boots. I don't like the fact that it gets dark so early. That being said, What do you change in your routine when it gets dark earlier? How will you use this change of routine as a benefit to you?

If you are at home more when it's dark early will you read more? Will you gain some other kinds of healthy habits? I know it easy to start baking and cooking up heavy foods when it's cool but don't lose everything you worked on over the summer. Think about your fall/winter routines now so you won't be blindsided.

Until tomorrow

Friday Focus

Good morning,
Grace and peace be unto you!
This morning I encourage you to focus on your life plan. Do you have a will, life insurance, and a burial plan? September is national life insurance month. Make sure you have some. It is selfish for you to say I'm not leaving nothing to these people.

The bible tells us that a good man leaves an inheritance for 3 generations after him. So, seriously you are not going to make sure your people can bury you and pay bills for at least one year after your passing. Your kids can walk up to my daddy's not here but here's my tuition in full window.
Friends we have got to do better in making sure the next generation is better prepared them we were.

Until Monday #liveBlessed

Thursday Thoughts

Good morning,
Grace and peace be unto you!

Wow, it has been a crazy week. Sorry I missed a few days of posting. Sometimes we can get overwhelmed by to chaos of life. Friends take the time to take care of you. I know you are chuckling right now asking, are you taking care of yourself? LOL

I am in the process of moving some things around to eliminate that burning at both ends and the middle feeling. Massage/reflexology appointment being made. What are you doing to help yourself relaxed? What are you reading that renews your mind? What activities are you doing that will keep your body moving? It has been proven that the endorphins released during exercise bring renewal.

Do what renews your mind, body, and spirit.

What tone do you set for your week?  Girl, it's Monday, don't nothing good happen on Monday or do you enter your week speaking love and expectation into it? I don't care what television tells you. Monday's don't have to be bad. You have the power to speak whatever you want into your week.

Wednesday Word

Good morning,
Grace and peace be unto you!

There are so many people hurting in today's society. Problems seem to have no easy resolution. I believe there are so many people with the same lament as below. Lord, please hear me, acknowledge that I am in pain. Acknowledge that you are still there. Acknowledge that I am not alone, even though I feel like it.

Today I just want to remind you that God has not forgotten you. Yes, you might feel alone, but that is an illusion from the enemy. You have been heard and your situation is being worked out. It might not come in the time frame or package that you want, but the answer is coming. I am praying for each and every one of you that are experiencing trying times. Your situation will not last forever, this season will pass. I pray for nothing but God's favor to shine upon you and give you and of those that are going through hard times clear direction. Love you know I love you to life.

Until tomorrow
