What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day ofLent. Its official name is “Day of Ashes,” so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross. Since it is exactly 40 days (excluding Sundays) beforeEaster Sunday, it will always fall on a Wednesday—there cannot be an “Ash Thursday” or “Ash Monday.” The Bible never mentions Ash Wednesday—for that matter, it never mentions Lent.

Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful activities and habits. Ash Wednesday commences this period of spiritual discipline. Ash Wednesday and Lent are observed by most Catholics and some Protestant denominations. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not observe Ash Wednesday; instead, they start Lent on “Clean Monday.”

While the Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday, it does record accounts of people in the Old Testament using dust and ashes as symbols of repentance and/or mourning (2 Samuel 13:19;Esther 4:1;Job 2:8;Daniel 9:3). The modern tradition of rubbing a cross on a person’s forehead supposedly identifies that person with Jesus Christ.

Should a Christian observe Ash Wednesday? Since the Bible nowhere explicitly commands or condemns such a practice, Christians are at liberty to prayerfully decide whether or not to observe Ash Wednesday.

If a Christian decides to observe Ash Wednesday and/or Lent, it is important to have a biblical perspective. Jesus warned us against making a show of our fasting: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:16-18). We must not allow spiritual discipline to become spiritual pride.

It is a good thing to repent of sinful activities, but that’s something Christians should do every day, not just during Lent. It’s a good thing to clearly identify oneself as a Christian, but, again, this should be an everyday identification. And it is good to remember that no ritual can make one’s heart right with God.

February 10th

Wow, it is amazing how you can be going along the path that you know is designed for you yet, you can get discouraged. I am not weary in well doing but the devil has his little distractions. If you are not careful the little rabbit trails will suck you in and you will find yourself following someone else's plan.

A couple of things to think about.
I will not let other people's thermometers decide my temperature. I am the only one that can and should be determining the temperature of my situation. Nobody can make me anything unless I lend my members to it.

Don't reduce your value for other people that don't understand your destiny. You are valuable but until you believe that you won't invest in yourself. Don't invest more into others than you do in yourself.

Three P's

As I pursue my journey the three p's come up. Patients, Persistence, Positivity.
Everything in my journey won't come easy but I must keep pushing forward. I can't be sidetracked by the people and the circumstances around me (even though it is tempting). I have a goal to reach, and there are people watching my attitude as I get to the finish line.
Pursue my sister.
I dont know about you, but I am not the most patient person, so this is a concept that I have to keep in front of me each day. Everybody doesn't think like me, believe like me, move at my pace or understand my vision. Therefore my patience and positivity have to lead me to persistence.  When Im focused and positive the no's  won't throw me off. Pursue,  pursue, pursue.

The Blood

Go-Red-For-Women-Real-Women-2013
Friday February 6th is wear National wear red for Women day. Make sure you wear red.

This was significant because I started thinking about the song that says the blood that Jesus shed for me; way back on Calvary, the blood that gives me strength from day to day. It will never loose its power. Wow, that is some powerful stuff. The blood that covers my sins. The blood that washes me whiter than snow. My God! The blood that brings me to a place of remission for my sins. The blood that pumps through my heart and gives my life, and that more abundantly.

We wear red because of heart disease, but if we think about it there is so much heart dis-ease in the body of Christ. Not because our physical heart has an issue but because our spiritual heart is sick. Proverbs 4:3 puts it this way Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.

Why do so many people have issues? They have a heart problem. Why can't I give? Heart problem. Why do I keep committing the same sin over and over? Heart problem. Why can't I maintain my victory? Heart problem. There is a balm for what ails you in the word of God.

Psalms 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Father today I pray for my sister that you will strengthen her heart in a way that only you can. Lord bring about a transfusion of the blood that runs through her heart so that her heart might be reinvigorated. Give her the strength and spiritual fortitude to press pass the issues that are overtaking her life and bring her to a place of peace and calm. Give her your heart-beat so that she will be in syncopation with heaven. In Jesus Name. Amen
